I am so excited to step into this role in the leadership of our phenomenal bachelor's program in public health. I've been involved in undergraduate education for the past 20 years, and joined UCSD as a faculty member just as the BSPH was first being built. It has been thrilling to see it grow from those early years into what it is now: thriving at the intersection of all the sciences and all the schools on campus, with a passionate, rapidly growing student body and superb faculty. I have taught core courses in the BSPH, MPH, and JDP programs, and have served on our education and curriculum committees to develop the content and policies for our new education programs and the new School of Public Health. I look forward to serving our faculty and students in this new role during this time of growth for our school and our field.
It is a great pleasure to be part of our bachelor's program in public health (BSPH). I have been involved in undergraduate education for over 30 years and have worked 26 years and UC San Diego. My career has focused on nutrition and cancer research, nutrition education programs for cancer patients and survivors and teaching medical and college students. I am passionate about the field of nutrition and public health and enjoy sharing how the role of food and lifestyle can play a role in disease prevention and overall health. Currently I teach three courses in BSPH, Clinical Nutrition, Health Behaviors and Disease Prevention and the Senior Capstone.
I look forward to this new role and working with our faculty, staff, and students to continue the growth of our School of Public Health and the success of our students.
I have been an academic advisor in the Herbert Wertheim School of Public Health since mid-2020. As a student at UC San Diego's Warren College, I became involved in student leadership, Orientation, and academic program management. I've been working with (mostly undergraduate) students for over 15 years, and worked in a variety of campus departments, including the Department of Psychology for 9.5 years. I also owned my own wedding and party planning business, and worked in both corporate and nonprofit settings.
One of the most important parts of my job now is helping students work through their confusion and stress about their future. As someone who struggled with what to do after graduation, I like to remind students that uncertainty can be a gift, and that transferable skills can come from anywhere.
I am mom to an elementary-age daughter and three cats; a foodie; a gardener; a crafter; a tabletop game player, and a geek for all things science fiction, fantasy, and theater.
I am a Triton Transfers Ally and am certified by the Equality Institute.
