Poster Preparation

Capstone and Honors Practicum Posters should contain succinct headings that organize and logically display the information.  Graphics should be explicit and brief.  Be prepared to discuss your poster content and address questions during your final exam.

We recommend posters are 3 feet high by 4 feet wide (or 36 inches x 48 inches) for the Final Poster Showcase.  If you are planning on presenting your poster at another event as well and wish to create a larger poster, the poster boards will accommodate posters that are up to 4 feet high x 5 feet wide (or 48 inches x 60 inches).  Please keep your poster size within these limits (between 3x4 feet and 4x5 feet).  The poster boards are plastic.  Double-stick tape squares will be provided for hanging of your poster on the boards.  Pushpins are not allowed.

Poster Design

A poster is basically an artistic expression of scientific data.  Posters usually have eye-catching, yet simple, drawings, diagrams, graphs and/or photographs with clean and attractive layouts.  Charts, Drawings and illustrations should resemble those you would create for a slide presentation.  Keep text and figure legends explicit and brief.

The poster session will be viewed by a large audience.  To accommodate a group at a single poster presentation, the size of the lettering (type) and illustrations must be large enough to be legible at a distance of approximately 4 to 6 feet.

  • The 6 best color combinations to use are suggested below. Remember the key is choosing contrasting colors and shades.  Simple use of color can add emphasis effectively.
    • Black on white
    • Red on white
    • Green on white
    • Blue on white
    • White on blue (no diazo)
    • White on black
  • Choose a typeface that is simple and clear.  The weight of the type chosen (the thickness of each letter) should be medium or bold.  The actual size of the type is measured in “points.”  To be legible at about 6 feet, use at least a 30-point font.
  • Use 1-inch margins.  Avoid using fancy fonts (e.g. Comic Sans).  Use upper and lowercase letters.  Lettering should be in bold, and letters in the title should be at least 1 inch high.
