Public Health Major Requirements 

(Effective Fall 2020 - for all students who entered UCSD prior to FA24)

BSPH Program offers courses in epidemiology, biostatistics, social and behavioral sciences, environmental and occupational health sciences, and health policy. The epidemiology and biostatistics areas offer courses on the determinants and distribution of disease at the population level with a focus on analyzing and interpreting public health data using statistical methods. The social and behavioral sciences area offers courses for students interested in how behaviors influence disease. The environmental and occupational health sciences area offers courses on the study of environmental and occupational factors, including biological, physical, and chemical factors that affect the health of a workforce and the community. The health policy area emphasizes the structure, process, and outcomes of health services and policies that are commonly used to motivate people to healthier lifestyles.

Please Note: Each concentration is its own major. Students can't double major within a single department (Academic Senate Policy). This means students can't declare more than one concentration.

BSPH with Concentration in Biostatistics (53 LD units)

  • Biology Option 1 required: BILD 1, BILD 2, BILD 3

  • One Computer Programming (CP) from the following: CSE 6, CSE 6R, CSE 8A, CSE 8B, CSE 11, CSE 180, CSE 180R, ECE 15

  • MATH 11, MATH 18, MATH 20A, MATH 20B, MATH 20C

BSPH with Concentration in Climate and Environmental Sciences (53 LD units)

  • Biology Option 1 required: BILD 1, BILD 2, BILD 3

  • CHEM 6A, CHEM 6B, CHEM 6C

  • MATH 10A/20A, MATH 10B/20B, MATH 11
  • Two Social and Behavioral Science Electives (SBE) from the following: ECON 1, ECON 2, ECON 3, ENVR 30, ESYS 10, USP 2

BSPH with Concentration in Community Health Sciences (32 or 33 LD units)

  • No differences to LD requirements as the general BSPH

BSPH with Concentration in Epidemiology (32 or 33 LD units)

  • Biology Option 1 required: BILD 1, BILD 2, BILD 3

BSPH with Concentration in Health Policy and Management Sciences (32 or 33 LD units)

  • Two Social and Behavioral Science Electives (SBE) from the following: ECON 1, ECON 2, ECON 3, POLI 10/10D, POLI 11/11D, POLI 30/30D

BSPH with Concentration in Medicine Sciences (60 or 61 LD units)

  • Biology Option 1 required: BILD 1, BILD 2, BILD 3

  • CHEM 6A, CHEM 6B, CHEM 6C, CHEM 7L

  • Three Natural Science (NS) (min 12 units) from the following: BILD 20, BILD 22, BILD 26, CHEM 40A, CHEM 40B, CHEM 40C, CHEM 43A, MATH 10A/20A, MATH 10B/20B, PHYS 1A, PHYS 1AL, PHYS 1B, PHYS 1BL, PHYS 1C, PHYS 1CL

Students who have completed a LD Anatomy w/ Lab and/or Microbiology w/ Lab at a Community College or another University may petition to use the course(s) towards their natural science area (must be UC transferable and be listed for units on academic history).

Double Majoring with Public Health

Students interested in double majoring with Public Health are encouraged to meet with a Public Health Advisor to plan their courses and fill out double major forms. 

Students may overlap up to two Upper Division courses between their majors.

COVID-19

Please note that the P/NP requirements were only effective Spring 2020 through Spring 2021; as of Fall 2021 no courses for the Public Health major may be taken for P/NP.

 

BSPH Major P/NP Update – WI21 & SP21 (as of 2/11/2021)

For WI21 and SP21:

All major courses (LD and UD) will be accepted for P/NP except for the following courses: FMPH 40, FMPH 193, FMPH 194, FMPH 196A, FMPH 196B, FMPH 196C.  

In addition, students may take a maximum of FOUR (4) total classes for P/NP for their major, excluding FMPH 40, FMPH 193, FMPH 194, FMPH 196ABC and courses that are only offered P/NP (FMPH 198, FMPH 199, AIP 197) between SP20 and SP21.
